Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What makes Uncommon Athlete different from CrossFit?

A: One of the most important differences is personality and atmosphere. You are going to get a great workout in a clean, fun, friendly facility by people who have experience and/or degrees in fitness.

Our focus is on activities of daily living and field performance, not so much gym performance. Crossfit is looking at what Gym Jones calls, “the sport of fitness” they are looking at gym numbers and exercises as a key component of their programs. At Uncommon Athlete we look at health and fitness for the everyday person. We understand what people do in their daily lives and this helps us change, modify, and improve our programs as we grow and progress.

Durability and mobility are a part of a detailed/intense warm up and recovery at UA. We also, at times, work these key components of fitness into our workouts.

Aspect of programming: At UA we work a flowing periodization process (there is a method to the madness) and it runs in cycles. We know not everyone is built the same nor at the same level of fitness, so we work these aspects on different days each week to create muscle confusion and also allow for recovery. Strength, Stamina, Endurance, Work Capacity, Overload, Mobility, Durability as well as Recovery are all part of our programming and completely scaleable.

At UA we feel that core strength and training is one of the most important parts of our fitness model. A strong core makes everything in life easier and makes you more healthy overall.

We believe in good healthy competition and we create an environment that develops that. However, not everything is for a Personal Record (PR) or time at a prescribed weight. Although we do have workouts or exercises that are for time, we also have them for grind not time or as fast as possible or a difficult but doable effort. All of these are prescribed as part of the work effort in order to increase work capacity, build cardio endurance, along with muscular strength.

Q. I have never done any weightlifting, is that a problem?

A:  Weightlifting (think what you see at the Olympics rather than the bodybuilding that you see at commercial gyms) it is a core component of Uncommon Athlete programing and has no peer in it’s ability to produce strong and powerful athletes.  However, we fully expect that people will start with little or no weightlifting skills.  All of the Uncommon Athlete trainers are qualified coaches.  Our program is specifically designed to teach people the weightlifting techniques and over time develop a high level of skill using these movement patterns.  So don’t worry.  Starting at the beginning is a great place to start, and means that you don’t have to unlearn any bad habits.

Q.  But what if I am not very fit?

A:  Then you have come to the right place because getting people fit is what we do and what we are very passionate about.  It doesn’t matter how fit you are (or aren’t) when you first walk in the door.  The workouts will be scaled to your current fitness level based off your health and fitness assessment. We don’t care how fit you are when you start, we only care how fit you are when you finish. All you need to do is show up with a positive attitude.  The rest takes care of itself over time.  If we think that you require some special attention to kickstart your training (ie you are injured, deconditioned or have mobility/stability issues) we will discuss the best way to bring you up to speed in a safe and controlled way.

Q.  Do I need to show up early to warmup?

A:  No.  Show up on time at the posted start time.  There will be time allocated to warmup.  Of course if you want to show up early to practice or do extra warmup, you are more than welcome.

Q.  What should I bring?

A: Wear comfortable clothes that you can train in and shoes that are suitable for cross training.  A lot of people wear a flat-soled shoe for the strength based sessions (running shoes are not much fun to squat in) and a cross-trainer or running shoe for the other sessions.  Bring a water bottle and a towel.

Q: I’m super fit. I run, bike, and I know all this stuff. Can’t I just join and skip the Uncommon Athlete Skill Training?

A: It is free! We are here to ensure your safety and it will serve as a refresher for those that have the foundation.

Q: Are you looking to get the same great UA programming but don’t live in the area?

A: UA offers the same challenging programs online. Just visit the UA Online Store and get started today!
